About Open Standards
Open standards organizations, like RESO, exist in most industries to ensure technology advancement. Two well-known examples are W3C, which creates the standards for the World Wide Web, and Bluetooth SIG, which creates wireless technology standards. The most powerful technology companies in the world agree to collaborate to build these standards and raise the technology foundations of all competitors.
This is why you can use the same web apps on nearly any phone and why you can connect that phone to nearly any pair of headphones. The products are built on open standards.
In real estate, RESO’s standards are created to promote that same experience: interoperability between MLS, broker, agent and consumer technology tools.
RESO Today
RESO’s standards and services have grown significantly over time.
- RESO Web API: The upgrade for real estate data transfer, replacing RETS.
- Data Dictionary: The industry’s universal language for data.
- Universal Property Identifier (UPI): A global solution for accurate property representation.
- Unique Organization Identifier (UOI): An accurate key to REALTOR® associations, MLSs and technology companies.
- Unique Licensee Identifier (ULI): An in-development standard to bring an accurate key ID for every sales licensee in the industry.
- Workgroups: RESO members collaborate to develop standards for Internet tracking, event models, payloads, interoperability, metadata and more.
- New organizations continue to join RESO and expand the positive effects of standards.
RESO’s core values align with those of open standards organizations across the globe. Our processes and products are collaborative, business-driven, transparent, innovative, open, inclusive and measurable. | RESO Bylaws
Our History
In 1999, the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) joined forces with leaders in technology to explore ways to make access to MLS data easier for real estate brokers, agents and their technology partners.
In 2002, NAR created an official workgroup, which would eventually become RESO. This workgroup created the first version of the well-documented Real Estate Transaction Standard (RETS).
RESO was incorporated in November 2011 as an independent, not-for-profit trade organization. Soon after, it released the industry’s Data Dictionary, followed by the RESO Web API, which replaced RETS. Over 500 MLSs have been certified on these standards.
Since 2020, RESO standards implementations have expanded outside of the U.S. including MLSs and technology companies across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, and Australia.
